1. Who we are
This policy explains how mateo ("mateo", "we", "us"), based in Budapest, Hungary, collects, uses, and protects personal information when you visit our website or use our platform, whether or not you have an account. The data controller is Kozma Viktor Richárd (email: kozma.viktor.richard@gmail.com).
2. Information we collect
Directly from you: name, email address, phone number, address, and — where relevant — identity verification details needed for a rental agreement or to comply with law. Generated by using the platform: listings, bookings, messages between users, reviews, and transaction or invoicing details related to your bookings. Automatically: device and log information (IP address, browser type, pages visited), and, if you use location-based search, your approximate or precise location.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to operate the platform: creating and managing your account, publishing listings, processing bookings, verifying identity where required, preventing fraud and abuse, providing customer support, complying with legal and tax obligations, and improving the service. We process this information because it's necessary to perform our contract with you, to comply with legal obligations, or based on our legitimate interest in keeping the platform safe and working well.
4. Email and SMS communications
We send transactional messages — booking confirmations, account and security notices, and messages from the other party to a booking — by email (delivered through Amazon Simple Email Service, part of Amazon Web Services) and, where phone verification is used, by SMS. These messages are necessary to the service and can't be turned off while your account is active. If we ever send optional marketing email, it will always include a one-click way to unsubscribe, and we won't send it without your consent where required by law.
5. Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you logged in and to remember your preferences, such as language and light/dark theme. We don't use them for third-party advertising.
6. Sharing your information
We share the minimum information necessary between an owner and a renter to complete a booking (for example, contact details once a booking is confirmed). We also share information with service providers who help us run the platform — including Amazon Web Services for email delivery and hosting infrastructure, and LocationIQ for location search and mapping — under agreements that limit their use of it to providing that service to us. We disclose information to authorities where required by law, and in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. We do not sell your personal information.
7. International data transfers
Some of our service providers may process data outside the European Economic Area, for example on infrastructure operated by Amazon Web Services. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, to protect your information.
8. Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active, and for a limited period afterward where needed for legal, tax, or dispute-resolution purposes. When we no longer need it for these purposes, we delete or anonymize it.
9. Your rights
Subject to applicable law, you can access, correct, export, or request deletion of your personal data at any time from your account settings or by contacting us directly. You can also object to or ask us to restrict certain processing, and withdraw any consent you've given, at any time. If you're in the European Economic Area, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority — in Hungary, the Nemzeti Adatvédelmi és Információszabadság Hatóság (NAIH).
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encrypting sensitive identification data at rest and restricting who on our team can access it.
11. Children's privacy
mateo isn't intended for anyone under 18, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time; significant changes will be communicated through the platform or by email before they take effect.
